Gambling addiction disrupts the lives of the problem gambler’s families and friends. Earning this certificate will help you learn how to meet the needs of problem gamblers and their significant others and families.

The Bellevue University Problem Gambling Certificate is approved by the Nebraska Commission on Problem Gambling (NCPG). The Certificate program is open only to Nebraska licensed professionals with the following credentials: LADC, LMHP, LIMHP, and Psychologists (PhD, PsyD).

Prerequisites

This program is open only to Nebraska licensed professionals with the following credentials: LADC, LMHP, LIMHP, and Psychologists (PhD).

Purpose of the courses: The licensed professional shall be able to communicate in a variety of situations to assure the needs of pathological or problem gamblers, their families and/or significant others are met, and continuity of care is maintained through case collaboration with other health care providers.

Required Course work:

  • The course is available for 3 weeks and all components are to be completed.
  • The course is online and self-paced.
  • The course must be completed with in the allotted time frame to receive credit and the certificate.

Upon successful completion of all courses the learner will earn 30 CEUs (clock hours) and be able to:

  • Demonstrate an awareness of gambling, problem gambling, and pathological gambling, including a historical appreciation focusing on prevalence and social impact in the US.
  • Identify the effects of problem/pathological gambling on the gambler personally, interpersonally, financially.
  • Integrate how the following affect work with gamblers/pathological gamblers and their families: sociocultural values, effective medical, psychological, social services, and spiritual management.
  • Define and identify specific skills applied when working with gamblers/pathological gamblers and their families.
  • Be eligible to take the state exam. Meeting the criteria of 80% or higher on the state exam enables application for a provisional license with the state of Nebraska.

This 4-part video course will consist of the following: Part I is basic background and introduction to treatment for gambling disorder. Part II is first client encounter, introducing the client to the counseling process, and obtaining client background information. Part III is development of treatment strategies for gambling disorder clients with specific strategies addressing common issues. Part IV is about developing social context and awareness of issues affecting addiction to gambling in the broader society.

Cost & Payment

Cost for 30 (clock) hours of instruction:
  • $210

  • Payment must be received with online registration. Registration is not complete without full payment.
  • Register at least two (2) business days prior to the beginning of a course. Registration for all courses will be available 60 days prior to the course start date.
  • Once the course starts there is no refund. Refunds are only available if the course is canceled before the start date.
  • Students will receive a confirmation email upon receipt of registration.

Jack Nelson received his Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Nebraska – Omaha with a focus on nonprofit management and an undergraduate degree in Business/Vocational Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Nelson has over 30 years of experience working and teaching in nonprofit organizations including in childcare, healthcare, and education. He has been an adjunct professor for Bellevue University in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2005 and also teaches in the College of Business undergraduate Nonprofit Management program.

Currently, Nelson is the Program Manager who oversees contracts and special programs within the Community of Practice focused on behavioral health in Bellevue University Continuing Education. Other experiences that provided a foundation for his career include roles as an Organizational Development Consultant for a regional healthcare organization, a Director of Programs for a childcare agency and as Program Consultant working with small and medium nonprofit childcare organizations focused on program development.

Approved Quality Education

This training course in counseling for addiction to gambling was created by Wiley Harwell, DMin, LPC, ICGC-II, and Loreen Rugle, PhD, ICGC-II, with technical assistance by Tana Russell of Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling, Olympia, Washington. The course was underwritten by and approved by the Nebraska Commission on Problem Gambling.
